From the Foundation

Great design does not always start from scratch. Sometimes it means reimagining what is already there. Whether demolishing and rebuilding or preserving and transforming, each approach carries distinct opportunities.

Here, we explore how Elizabeth Hales Design evaluates both directions to craft homes that are intentional, enduring, and deeply aligned with our clients' goals.

At Elizabeth Hales Design, we have worked across a wide range of project types, from focused interior updates to complete transformations. One recent scrape-and-build was a reminder that, in the right circumstances, starting from a clean slate can be the smartest and most impactful path forward.

Scrape-and-build projects allow us to reorient a home on its site, capture better views, rethink the entire plan, and integrate modern systems from the beginning. The result is a home shaped around long-term performance, natural light, and the way a family actually lives.

“The right decision begins with understanding what the home can become, not only what it is today.”

A remodel can be the best path when the structure is sound, carries historical or sentimental value, or when preserving original character is central to the vision. A scrape-and-build often makes more sense when the layout, systems, or structure limit what is possible.

Our role is to help clients weigh both options with clarity, balancing vision, budget, site conditions, and long-term goals to determine the most thoughtful path forward.
